Buried ancient Egyptian city revealed by radar imaging

The 3,500-year-old capital of Egypt's foreign occupiers has been revealed by archaeologists using radar imaging.

Egypt was ruled for a century from 1664-1569 BC by the Hyksos, a warrior people from Asia, possibly Semitic in origin, whose summer capital was in the northern Delta area.

Irene Mueller, the head of the Austrian archaeological team, said the main purpose of the project was to determine how far the underground city extended.

The radar imaging showed the outlines of streets, houses and temples underneath the green farm fields and modern town of Tel al-Dabaa.
Such non-invasive techniques are the best way define the extent of the site, the team said in a statement. Egypt's Delta is densely populated and heavily farmed, making extensive excavation difficult, unlike in southern Egypt with its more famous desert tombs and temples.
The Austrian team of archaelogists has been working on the site since 1975.

Today I am proud to announce that my toaster gets over 230 miles per gallon (in the city). In fact, it gets well over that, having used absolutely no gas in several years of daily toasting of untold breads and pastries. Also, my computer gets shockingly good gas mileage, and my shoes, and my tomato plants.

What? All these “facts” are absolutely nonsensical and irrelevant, because those things don’t run off of gasoline in the first place? Well, yeah, but then neither does the Chevy Volt in city driving.

Yet all day today I’ve had to endure repeated news stories

touting the claims that the Chevy Volt, the flagship of the new government-owned GM, may get an EPA mileage rating of 230 miles per gallon, city.

Well big whoop. The Chevy Volt is a plug-in hybrid, designed to go up to 40 miles off of the electricity from a full battery charge.

This lack of gas usage does not mean it will use no energy, however.

But that’s the way it’s being touted.

'War' on poisonous Australia toad

People in the Australian state of Queensland have taken part in a mass capture of poisonous cane toads as part of a collective effort at pest control.

The celebratory cull is known as Toad Day Out and was advocated by a Queensland politician, Shane Knuth.

The toads have to be captured alive and unharmed, examined by experts, and then killed humanely under the event rules.

Cane toads were introduced to Australia from South America in 1935 to eat beetles, but became a pest themselves.

Critics of the toads blame them for the deaths of crocodiles that may have feasted on them, inadvertently poisoning themselves.

The majority of toads will be turned into fertiliser or donated to the science department of James Cook University.

But a few of the largest ones will be stuffed by a local Queensland taxidermist.

"This is an example of how the war against cane toads can be won," said Mr Knuth, who hopes to take Toad Day Out nationwide.

A zoologist keen to cool off in the South African heat was joined by an unlikely swimming partner - a giant lioness.

mountains, Mr Richardson, 34, was joined by Meg the lioness.

Weighing a staggering 185 kg this boisterous tawny lioness playfully splashed
around with the experienced behaviourist.

"We went swimming purely for Meg's enrichment," Mr Richardson said.

"People are always amazed that she doesn't rip me to pieces with her
claws," he said.

Scientists discover new forest with undiscovered species on Google Earth

The mountainous area of northern Mozambique in southern Africa had been overlooked by science due to inhospitable terrain and decades of civil war in the country.

However, while scrolling around on Google Earth, an internet map that allows the viewer to look at satellite images of anywhere on the globe, scientists discovered an unexpected patch of green.

A British-led expedition was sent to see what was on the ground and found 7,000 hectares of forest, rich in biodiversity, known as Mount Mabu.

Dancing Plague of 1518

The Dancing Plague (or Dancing Epidemic) of 1518 was a case of dancing mania that occurred in Strasbourg, Alsace, France (then part of the Holy Roman Empire) in July 1518. Numerous people took to dancing for days without rest, and over the period of about one month, most of the people died from heart attack, stroke, or exhaustion.^[1]

The outbreak began in July 1518, when a woman, Frau Troffea, began to dance fervently in a street in Strasbourg.^[1] This lasted somewhere between four to six days. Within a week, 34 others had joined, and within a month, there were around 400 dancers. Most of these people eventually died from heart attack, stroke, or exhaustion.^[1]

It is not known why these people danced to their deaths, nor is it clear that they were dancing willfully.

Possible Causes...

Mass psychogenic illnes:
Historian John Waller thinks that the dancing epidemic was caused by mass psychogenic illness (MPI), a manifestation of mass hysteria that is often preceded by extreme levels of psychological distress. Waller states that famine had been prevalent in the region for some time, caused by very cold winters, very hot summers, crop frosts, and violent hailstorms.

Ergotism:
Eugene Backman suggests the cause of this epidemic to be ergot, a mold that grows on rye. Ingestion of ergot in bread made from the affected rye could lead to delirium, hallucinations, and seizures, as well as other symptoms. While today this is called ergotism, contemporaneously it was known as "Saint Anthony's fire".

Religious Ecstasy:
Sociologist Robert Bartholomew of James Cook University in Australia contends that the dance was part of a "ecstatic ritual of a heretical sect". This explanation is questioned by Waller, who believes "there is no evidence that the dancers wanted to dance", citing recorded evidence that the dancers showed expressions of "fear and desperation".

Saint Vitus's Dance:
Christian legend says that invoking the wrath of St. Vitus could provoke compulsive dancing(or that dancing before an image of St. Vitus would imbue good health for the following year).However, this explanation does not support how so many cases of chorea could arise simultaneously in the population, nor how so many adults were affected.

ScienceDaily (July 24, 2008) — A University of Washington study of top-selling laundry products and air fresheners found the products emitted dozens of different chemicals. All six products tested gave off at least one chemical regulated as toxic or hazardous under federal laws, but none of those chemicals was listed on the product labels.

"I first got interested in this topic because people were telling me that the air fresheners in public restrooms and the scent from laundry products vented outdoors were making them sick," said Anne Steinemann, a UW professor of civil and environmental engineering and of public affairs. "And I wanted to know, 'What's in these products that is causing these effects?'"

She analyzed the products to discover the chemicals' identity.

His people, the Bahima, are thought to have migrated into the hilly grasslands of western Uganda more than a thousand years ago, alongside a hardy breed of longhorns known as the Ankole. For centuries, man and beast subsisted there in a tight symbiotic embrace. Mugira’s nomadic ancestors wandered in search of fresh pasture for their cattle, which in turn provided them with milk. It is only within the last few generations that most Bahima have accepted the concept of private property. Mugira’s family lives on a 500-acre ranch, and one sunny day in November, the wiry 26-year-old showed me around, explaining, with some sadness but more pragmatism, why the Ankole breed that sustained his forebears for so many generations is now being driven to extinction.

As unwelcome as they are, higher gasoline prices do come with a plus side – fewer deaths from car accidents, says a researcher at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). An analysis of yearly vehicle deaths compared to gas prices found death rates drop significantly as people slow down and drive less. If gas remains at $4 a gallon or higher for a year or more, traffic deaths could drop by more than 1,000 per month nationwide, said Michael Morrisey, Ph.D., director of UAB's Lister Hill Center for Health Policy and a co-author on the new findings.

The results come after earlier research by the coauthors found lower gas prices have the opposite effect by wiping away many of lifesaving outcomes from the enactment of mandatory seatbelt laws, lower blood alcohol limits and graduated drivers licenses for youth.
