Tthe Dog Whisperer on Solving the 5 Common Dog Misbehaviors

clipped from www.reuters.com

Dog Whisperer Cesar Millan's Tips for the 5 Most Common Canine Misbehaviors

5.) Aggression towards other dogs -
Watch your temper! If you are tense,
frustrated, or angry, your dog will mirror that energy right back at you, so
it's especially important to remain calm when dealing with an aggressive dog.
4.) Overexcitement or hyperactivity
Dogs require at least 30 minutes of a
structured walk every day. Talk to your vet about how much exercise your dog
can safely handle.
3.) Barking while the owner is away
Instead of showering your dog with affection, practice
no touch, no talk, and no eye contact for at least five minutes when entering
or leaving your home.
2.) Barking at a specific stimulus
If it's the doorbell that sets your
dog off, ring it when no one is coming over,
1.) Problems on the walk - A canine pack leader leads, and so should you! Your
dog should always be next to you or behind you, never out in front. Make sure
you are the first one out the door and the first one to come back in.

The Crocodile Whisperer ... and Wrestler!

'After 10 years I started to work with him,' he says. 'At first it was slow, slow and I started to play with him a little, touching him a little bit and then slowly doing more. Then I found that when I called his name he would come over to me.'

Unlikely friendship: Chito rests on top of buddy Pocho, who he rescued after the crocodile was shot in the eye

Unlikely friendship: Chito rests on top of buddy Pocho, who he rescued after the crocodile was shot in the eye

Known as the 'Crocodile Man', Costa Rican animal lover 'Chito' swims, plays and even feeds 'Pocho' the giant  crocodile in what is one of the world's most unlikely friendships.

Wading chest-deep through the green water in a 100 sq/m lake in Siquirres, this bizarre and dangerous spectacle draws tourists from around the world.

Calling quietly for his five metre long 'companion' before thrashing around, lifting his tail and head above the water.

Crazy: Chito plays with Pocho the crocodile, who seems to enjoy the attention

'This is a very dangerous routine but Pocho is my friend and we have a good relationship,' says 52-year-old Chito. 'He will look me in the eye and he does not attack me.

Rolling around: Chito says that if anyone else entered the water it would be deadly

'It is too dangerous for anyone else to come in the water. It is only ever the two of us.'

Tourist attraction: It took Chito many years to build his relationship with Pocho to this level

Chevy Volt Gets 230 MPG?

The media no longer sees itself as an arbiter of truth or a purveyor of information, but as a cheerleading booster of particular causes – typically the causes supported by the urban intelligentsia of the coasts. High on the list of fashionable political causes to be evangelized is the war against oil, which before an election always seems to become “foreign” oil. (After the election, petro-equality returns and domestic oil is bad-mouthed, too).
Today I am proud to announce that my toaster gets over 230 miles per gallon (in the city). In fact, it gets well over that, having used absolutely no gas in several years of daily toasting of untold breads and pastries. Also, my computer gets shockingly good gas mileage, and my shoes, and my tomato plants.
What? All these “facts” are absolutely nonsensical and irrelevant, because those things don’t run off of gasoline in the first place? Well, yeah, but then neither does the Chevy Volt in city driving.
Yet all day today I’ve had to endure repeated news stories
touting the claims that the Chevy Volt, the flagship of the new government-owned GM, may get an EPA mileage rating of 230 miles per gallon, city.
Well big whoop. The Chevy Volt is a plug-in hybrid, designed to go up to 40 miles off of the electricity from a full battery charge.
This lack of gas usage does not mean it will use no energy, however.
But that’s the way it’s being touted.

Eco-Friendly Fireworks Offer Safer Pyrotechnics

clipped from dsc.discovery.com
Fireworks are fun, exciting and often free to watch, but there may be a hidden cost: The flashing displays can harm the environment and pose risks to human health
scientists are working on a new generation of kinder, gentler pyrotechnics. While still explosive and dramatic, these fireworks produce less smoke and use fewer toxic metals that end up in soil and groundwater
Eco-friendly fireworks are more expensive than the regular kind
But the research should be welcome news for people who operate or watch fireworks on a regular basis
Everyone at or downwind of a pyrotechnic display is getting subjected to levels of these metals that aren't natural levels
Whether that really is going to cause health effects is up for debate
Disneyland provided the initial impetus for Chavez's group to start investigating cleaner burning fireworks
as the theme park put on spectacular fireworks displays, neighbors began to complain about smoke that was enveloping their homes and irritating their lungs

Australian War on Poisonous Cane Toads

'War' on poisonous Australia toad

People in the Australian state of Queensland have taken part in a mass capture of poisonous cane toads as part of a collective effort at pest control.

The celebratory cull is known as Toad Day Out and was advocated by a Queensland politician, Shane Knuth.

The toads have to be captured alive and unharmed, examined by experts, and then killed humanely under the event rules.

A cane toad resident exhibited at Taronga Zoo in Sydney (2005)

Cane toads were introduced to Australia from South America in 1935 to eat beetles, but became a pest themselves.

Critics of the toads blame them for the deaths of crocodiles that may have feasted on them, inadvertently poisoning themselves.

The majority of toads will be turned into fertiliser or donated to the science department of James Cook University.

But a few of the largest ones will be stuffed by a local Queensland taxidermist.

"This is an example of how the war against cane toads can be won," said Mr Knuth, who hopes to take Toad Day Out nationwide.

South African Zoologist Swims with 185kg Lioness

clipped from www.telegraph.co.uk

A zoologist keen to cool off in the South African heat was joined by an unlikely swimming partner - a giant lioness.

Kevin Richardson swims with Meg the Lion, South Africa: Lioness swims with zoologist

Kevin Richardson swims with Meg the lion in the Crocodile River just south of the Magaliesburg mountains, near Johannesburg, South Africa

Animal behaviourist Kevin Richardson raises and interacts some of the most
dangerous animals known to man.

With his unusual methods, he has developed some exceptionally personal bonds
with his students, playing, sleeping and even swimming with animals. Taking
a well deserved swim in the Crocodile River, just south of the Magaliesburg
mountains, Mr Richardson, 34, was joined by Meg the lioness.

Weighing a staggering 185 kg this boisterous tawny lioness playfully splashed
around with the experienced behaviourist.

"We went swimming purely for Meg's enrichment," Mr Richardson said.

"People are always amazed that she doesn't rip me to pieces with her
claws," he said.

She takes no
coaxing to get her to swim.

50 Billion Bottles of Beer on the Wall...

50 Billion bottles of beer on the wall…

Beer. A sweet nectar from the gods themselves. A 8,000 year old process of refinement culminated into 12 oz of sublime libation. More than milk, coffee, or even bottle water, beer is the drink of choice for thirsty Americans of age. Yes, we Americans grease the wheels of human emotion with this social lubricant like no other. Some 200 million barrels a year go down our collective hatches. But instead of a string of numbers, lets visualize our way to grasping the United States’ yearly beer consumption.

Only China is has a greater thirst, but they also have an extra billion people’s thirst to quench so with only one fourth of the population, we certainly hold our own.
